Mel Miller was an inspired leader who understood the honor of public service. He attracted talented staffers, both in Albany and in Brooklyn, who shared his deep respect for government and were proud to be part of his team. His accomplishments have had a lasting impact on New York State: creation of the MWBE program, banning assault weapons, consistent and principled opposition to the death penalty, the environmental bond act, safe streets/safe cities, empowering communities of color through the Black and Puerto Rican Caucus and Somos El Futuro, criminal justice reform, growing a majority in the People’s House, and maintaining a respectful and productive relationship with then Minority Leader Clarence Rappleyea. With dignity and integrity, Mel fulfilled his deeply-felt responsibility as a public servant and made government in New York work better for those who needed it most. RIP Mel.
